IDEA: Portable Water Filter

Annie, 15, USA - A portable filter that can benefit people who need clean water in poorer countries. The filter would be made of aluminum, which can be obtained through recycled soda cans, making it green.
The only part that may need replacing is the cotton/cheesecloth, although a terry cloth could be used instead and only needs to be squeezed out and rinsed once in a while. Each compartment screws into the next, allowing each to separate, in case of clogging, or to clean the container. A strainer separates each compartment from the next and on the side of the collecting compartment, there is a small spout with a screw on cap to pour water out.
It is simple to use – just pour the water through and wait for it to drip through.
Although it isn’t completely purified, it is much better than just pouring through a strainer. Boiling the water after would sterilize the water and kill bacteria. But small and large particles are trapped after pouring through the filter.
It is a version of a filter that requires little upkeep, no costly replacements, eco-friendly, and relatively inexpensive.

It’s the Colbert Report so it has some comedy but Dean Kamen means business.
