VENTURE: Biofilm Membrane

Tiara Marshall, 17, USA – Though oil and water don’t mix, the two are mixed together all the time – especially when there are big oil spills.

The clean up is never pretty – or easy.  Our project, A Biofilm Membrane for Remediating Oil Contaminated Locales, is our attempt to provide a solution using biofilm filtration membranes.

We want to produce a cheap, cost-effective filtration system that can be used in developing nations such as Ecuador where oil spills are both a current and past problem.  Background research shows that oil in Ecuador has remained in the back villages of Ecuador since the 1960’s.

A Biofilm Membrane for Remediating Oil would be an environmentally sound and inexpensive approach to provide individuals in these regions with clean water.

We will combine biological resource with polymer science to see this new innovating invention to fruition.

Goals:

  1. Develop an effective electrospun membrane with precise  petrophillic bacteria
  2. Develop a pump system to manage the efflux of clean water
  3. Develop a housing for the filtration unit
  4. Patent and share invention with others
