Roots & Shoots, a program of the Jane Goodall Institute, is a youth-driven global network that connects people of all ages who are creating positive change for people, animals and the environment. Roots & Shoots goes beyond motivating youth to learn about the issues facing our local and global communities—it helps them design, lead and implement their own projects to address them.

How do you support young environmentalists?

logo-roots-shootsRoots & Shoots provides resources, training and support to empower youth to take action in their schools and communities. Our annual national campaigns aim to unite Canadian Roots & Shoots groups’ activities around a common and pertinent theme in order to increase their impact. The 2009 campaign, Project Blue, provides fact sheets, tip sheets, project and fundraising ideas, events and contests for members to take action on water-related issues. Future campaigns will target a diverse range of environmental themes.

How does a young person participate in your program(s)?

Roots & Shoots registration is free and easy – simply visit our website, www.rootsandshoots.ca, and click on “Join Roots & Shoots!” to become a group or individual member. Once registered, you will receive our online publications full of ideas and inspiration. Generally, Roots & Shoots members craft service projects tailored to their individual, group, or community/school needs, skills and interests. Active groups are featured on our website and in our newsletters. Members can also take part in ongoing campaigns and events.

What makes your organization unique or different?

Roots & Shoots is unique in that it truly is a global program. By taking part, members have access to a network of over 100,000 youth in almost 100 countries! After completing projects, members can share and connect with Roots & Shoots groups across Canada and around the world, using one of the many tools on the global website, through the global newsletter, or via the international correspondence program.
